Arborist (Tree Surgeon)
An arborist (commonly known as a tree surgeon), is a specialist professional who is involved in the cultivation, care, management and maintenance of trees and shrubs. While trees do provide many benefits, they can also be very large, heavy and complicated that require professional monitoring and treatment to ensure they are healthy and safe. An arborist's work includes, but is not limited to some of the following: planting, pruning, structural support, diagnosis and treatment of tree diseases, the control of pests or abiotic disorders, lightning protection and tree removal. Some Arborists also compile plans, consult, write reports and give legal testimony. While some aspects of this work may be done on the ground or in an office, much of it requires the arborist to physically climb the trees, using ropes, harnesses and other climbing equipment.
Choosing a tree surgeon
Searching for a qualified, reliable and experienced arborist (tree surgeon)? Here is a brief outline of what to ask and look out for.
Ask if there is a charge for a preliminary visit and if this is refundable if the work is carried out. Find out how long they have been in business and what qualifications they have, checking original certificates of competence and certificates of insurance if necessary. Ask to see references, and photographs, and ideally speak to previous clients to check work carried out was satisfactory. Discuss the work with more than one contractor to get a general idea of costs and then get estimates for each part of the work involved and ensure this specifies the method of disposal of surplus materials and rubbish.
Belonging to professional organisations can be expensive and there are often satisfactory local arborists who do not belong to these. These can offer good value as they may be recommended by word-of-mouth and there are few travelling costs. Many of these are listed within this site.
Alternatively, contact the Tree Officer of your local council who should also be able to supply a list of local experts.
Registration to be listed in the UK Arborist Directory will be available soon. To register your interest, please complete the form below.
